Arizona auto insurance: what to know
A-MAX is an independent agency that compares 35+ carriers for Arizona drivers, including non-standard carriers that work with drivers other companies decline.
Arizona minimum required: 25/50/15 liability coverage
No personal injury protection: Arizona does not have it, so medical payments coverage is optional and separate
Uninsured and underinsured motorist: two separate coverages here, and your carrier must offer both in writing
SR-22 filings: filed electronically with the Arizona MVD, often within an hour, and the filing runs three years from the date of your suspension
Same-day coverage: available in most cases
A-MAX offices: three in Phoenix, one in Yuma, Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 6:00PM
How to start: call 602-268-2548 or quote online
What Arizona law requires
Every Arizona driver has to carry at least 25/50/15 in liability coverage. Liability pays for the other person, not for your own car.
Arizona minimum liability coverage requirements (25/50/15)| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 | Injury or death of one person in an accident you cause |
|---|
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 | Injury or death of two or more people in that same accident |
|---|
| Property damage, per accident | $15,000 | Damage to the other person’s vehicle or property |
|---|
Two Arizona-specific things worth knowing. The state has no personal injury protection, so medical payments coverage is optional and has to be added on purpose. And your carrier is required to offer you uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage in writing, which are two different coverages here, not one.

Choosing your coverage
Liability only Meets the 25/50/15 requirement and keeps your payment as low as Arizona law allows. Usually the right call on an older or paid-off vehicle. How liability coverage works →
Collision and comprehensive Liability plus collision and comprehensive, so your own car is covered too. If you finance or lease, your lender almost certainly requires it. What full coverage includes →
SR-22 filing Arizona calls it future financial responsibility. We file it electronically with the Arizona MVD, often within an hour of binding your policy. SR-22 Insurance →
Non-owner policy You drive, but the car is not yours. Common when you need an SR-22 but do not currently own a vehicle. Non-owner coverage →
No current license Being unlicensed does not automatically lock you out of coverage in Arizona. We work with carriers that write these policies. Insurance for Unlicensed Drivers →
Driving into Mexico Your Arizona policy stops at the border. Trips into Sonora need a separate Mexican policy, which we can write before you go. Mexico Tourist Insurance →
Still deciding? Do not guess at it. Call 602-268-2548 and an agent will price the options next to each other so you can see the difference in dollars, not in jargon.
How it works
- Call 602-268-2548 or start online. Have your driver license, vehicle information and current policy handy if you have one. That is all it takes to start.
- We compare 35+ carriers. Your agent shops the market while you are on the line and lays the options out side by side. You make the call.
- Drive covered today. Proof of insurance goes to your phone. If you need an SR-22, we send the filing to the Arizona MVD the same day.
Auto insurance in your city
Two drivers with identical records can pay different rates on opposite sides of the Valley. Start with your city.
Drivers other companies turn away
Tickets or an at-fault accident A rough record narrows your options. It does not eliminate them, and the carriers we work with price it differently. Insurance With a Bad Driving Record →
DUI or suspension In Arizona the SR-22 stays on file for three years from the date of your suspension. We handle the filing and keep it current. SR-22 Insurance →
Adding a teen or a new driver One of the biggest rate jumps a family sees. Worth shopping the whole market rather than accepting your current carrier’s number. Auto Insurance for Teens →
What does auto insurance cost in Arizona?
There is no single Arizona rate. Two neighbors on the same street can be quoted very differently, because carriers weight the same facts in different ways.
What moves your Arizona rate:
- Your ZIP code. Local theft and accident rates are the single biggest swing between two Arizona addresses.
- Your driving record. At-fault accidents and tickets in the last 3 to 5 years.
- Annual mileage. Long Valley or I-10 commutes push rates up.
- Your vehicle. SUVs and trucks often carry higher comprehensive premiums.
- The coverage you pick. Liability only versus adding collision and comprehensive is usually the biggest lever you control.
- Coverage gaps. A recent lapse adds risk with most carriers.
- Credit history, where Arizona law permits.
That is why we do not publish a number here. Call 602-268-2548 and you will have your real quote in about 10 minutes. If you want to lower the number before you call, start with these ways to save on auto insurance.
Arizona auto insurance FAQ
What is the minimum car insurance required in Arizona?
Arizona requires 25/50/15 liability coverage: $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 per accident for property damage. That is the legal minimum to drive in Arizona, and it pays only for the people and property you damage, never for your own vehicle.
Does Arizona require uninsured motorist coverage?
Not as a condition of driving, but your carrier has to offer it to you in writing, on an approved form. In Arizona, uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist are two separate coverages rather than one bundled item, so you will see two decisions to make, not one. If you say no, say no on purpose. Getting hit by a driver with no coverage is exactly the scenario these pay for.
Does Arizona have no-fault insurance?
No. Arizona is an at-fault state and does not have personal injury protection. Your own medical bills after an accident are covered by medical payments coverage, which is optional in Arizona and has to be added to the policy on purpose. If you assumed your minimum policy covers your own injuries, it does not.
How long do I need an SR-22 in Arizona?
Three years from the date of your suspension, not three years from the day you file. Arizona officially calls the filing future financial responsibility, though nearly everyone says SR-22. Judgment suspensions are handled case by case, so contact the Arizona MVD for the length on yours. If the policy behind the filing lapses, your insurer notifies the state and the clock can start over, which is why we watch renewals for SR-22 customers.
What happens if I drive without insurance in Arizona?
Arizona requires you to carry proof of insurance and show it on request, and carriers report policy status to the state, so a lapse can surface without a traffic stop. Driving uninsured can lead to suspension of your driver license, registration and plates, and getting them back can require an SR-22 filing on top of what you owe the state. Penalty amounts and reinstatement requirements change, so check current figures with the Arizona MVD rather than any number you read online.
Can I get car insurance in Arizona without a driver license?
Often, yes. Not having a current Arizona license does not automatically lock you out of coverage. We work with carriers that write these policies, and for a lot of drivers it is a step toward getting the license back. Bring whatever identification you do have and an agent will work with it.
Does my Arizona auto policy cover me in Mexico?
No. An Arizona policy stops at the border, whether you carry the state minimum or much more. Any trip into Sonora needs a separate Mexican auto policy, which we write before you go. Mexico tourist insurance →
Can I get Arizona car insurance the same day?
In most cases, yes. Have your driver license or ID, your vehicle’s VIN, and proof of any prior insurance if you have it, and most quotes wrap in about 10 minutes with coverage bound that day. Same-day timing depends on the carrier and your record, but it is the standard outcome for most customers.
